For me, the first step was giving myself permission to think bigger than my bosses. They had been given a project they had to deliver on, and I was part of that. But it was limiting because their goal was to deliver, not surpass. For me, it took years to figure it out, but eventually I allowed myself to go bigger, harder. A warning though, it can be challenging for your boss, so think about the signal your actions take, and have a plan in place to explain if challenged on it.

Your insights never fail to impress, my man! Sometimes we have to be OK with just delivering on the project when all we want to do is surpass the desired outcome. The learnings gleaned from those undesirable moments are equally as valuable. They simply need to be processed and applied differently. #tsunami

Once I’d figured that out, the only option was to leave and launch my own start up. Then I had no limits but my own capabilities and energy. I learned that sometimes innovation needs to be externalised to happen, and accountability is empowering. In the end, I became my former employer's best asset by NOT working for them, and everyone won.
